Breakdown repair, planned maintenance, rebuilds and CNC upgrades for Webster & Bennett vertical borers and vertical turning centres, from the team that designed and built every new Webster & Bennett model from 1993 to 2010.

If you run a Webster & Bennett machine, VTT-WB is the specialist to call. We are not a general maintenance company that has added Webster & Bennett to a list of brands. We designed the Millennium, Evolution, Revelation and Aeroturn vertical turning centres, built them, and have supported them ever since. We also service, rebuild and modernise the older conventional Webster & Bennett 36, 48, 72 and double column machines.

Why Webster & Bennett owners come to us

  • We designed them. The VTT-WB team designed and built all the new Webster & Bennett models from 1993 until 2010. We know how they were put together, why, and what wears.
  • One engineer for the whole machine. A single service engineer covers CNC, electrics, mechanical and hydraulics, so you are not waiting for three different contractors.
  • Work done in situ wherever possible. Most service, repair and upgrade work is carried out on your shop floor. Your machine does not have to be removed or transported, so you avoid the cost of moving it and get it back into production sooner.
  • Decades of history. Machine tool rebuilding since 1961 and Webster & Bennett vertical turning specialists since 1986.
  • Based in Birmingham. Our factory is at Unit 2, Priory Road Industrial Estate, Aston, close to where many of these machines are still at work.

Webster & Bennett breakdown repair

When a vertical borer stops, so does the work that depends on it. Tell us the model, the control and what the machine is doing, and we will help you work out the likely cause, often before anyone gets in a van. Typical breakdown work includes:

  • CNC control, drive and axis faults, including control alarms
  • Electrical faults, from contactors and relay logic on older machines to modern drives and motors
  • Hydraulic problems: pressure loss, leaks, valves and pumps
  • Mechanical faults on the table drive, gearboxes, rams, crossrails and turrets
  • Lubrication, guarding and safety interlock problems

Planned maintenance

Most Webster & Bennett breakdowns give warning first: a drift in accuracy, a noisy gearbox, an axis that hunts, or a fault that clears on reset. Planned maintenance catches these early. We can look after your machine on a regular schedule, check its condition and accuracy, and tell you plainly what needs doing now and what can wait.

Rebuilds, reconditioning and CNC upgrades

When repairs become frequent, parts become hard to find, or accuracy can no longer be held, it may be time for a bigger job. Because Webster & Bennett castings and base structures are so well engineered, they are usually worth keeping.

  • Mechanical reconditioning to restore geometry and accuracy. See machine tool reconditioning.
  • CNC retrofit and modernisation through our ManuPlus programme, which since 2004 has given older Webster & Bennett machines new clean, dry electric controls in full CNC or manual-CNC form. See CNC retrofit and the ManuPlus programme.
  • Redesign to add capability your work now needs, carried out in situ wherever possible.

Not sure whether to repair, recondition or replace? Our guide Rebuild or replace? sets out the options.

Common questions

Is it worth repairing an old Webster & Bennett?

Usually, yes. The castings, table and base of a Webster & Bennett are built to last for decades. If the structure is sound, repairing or upgrading the parts that wear, and the electrics and controls, almost always costs far less than a new machine of the same capacity.

Can you work on the machine where it stands?

Yes, wherever possible. Most service, repair and upgrade work is done in situ on your shop floor, so the machine does not need to be moved.

Do you only work on the CNC Webster & Bennett models?

No. We designed and built the CNC models from 1993, but we also service, rebuild and modernise the older conventional Webster & Bennett vertical borers.

My machine is showing an alarm. Can you help?

Yes. Send us the machine model, the control type and the alarm number or a photo of the screen, and we will tell you what it is likely to be and what to do next.

Where are you based?
